ASMPLA and LADIG BRING YOU:
CGI
– Friend or Foe to photographers?
Is the world ending as we know it?
Are
these even the right questions?
It's not news that CGI is being used increasingly by architects, in car ads, in fashion ads; everywhere, in fact. But it turns
out that to do CGI – Computer Generated Imaging – with any quality, you’ve got
to start with photography.
Walt
Jones, photographer and a self-proclaimed “Hollywood” guy who works with CGI on
a daily basis, will explain some of the ways this all works – including how CGI
is used in photography.
He’ll
talk about the “production pipeline”, the various steps involved, and the
tools, software, and “assets”.
He’ll
talk about how photographers can see themselves as producers and designers, and
not camera operators.
He’ll
talk about the future of CGI and how it relates to the past; for instance,
whether photography replaced painting and illustration (yes and no), and what
that suggests about the present state of affairs.
Photographers
are called “artists” for a reason, and digital technologies – including CGI and
Photoshop – are simply the tools of the trade.
Walt
Jones is part of a team that won an Academy Award for their work on “The Golden
Compass”, has been a producer and professional gear-head, and is also a
fine-art photographer.
You
can see his work here:

There will be food, and there will be drink.
